Day Trips from Timișoara: What to See Outside the City
Recaș for wineries, Buziaș for mineral springs, Lipova for a fortress, Arad and Vršac for a change of pace. By car, each is less than an hour away.
After a day or two in the city, the surroundings of Timișoara offer wineries, fortresses, spa towns, and cities with a different rhythm. By car, each destination below is less than an hour away. Without a car, options are limited to what you can reach by train or organised transfer.
This article covers what deserves a full day or half a day, not a complete list of Banat villages. The two-day city itinerary is in the Timișoara city break. Transport to Timișoara is in Getting to Timișoara.
Recaș: wineries and tastings
Recaș is the wine-growing centre closest to Timișoara, approximately 25 km east on the road to Lugoj. The Recaș vineyards produce white and red wines from local and international grape varieties.
The main winery — Cramele Recaș — offers tours and tastings by reservation. The area also has smaller cellars with more informal tastings. A visit takes 2–3 hours, enough for half a day.
The road from Giroc passes through the south of Timișoara and exits on DN6 towards Lugoj. From Union Square, add the crossing of the city.
Buziaș: mineral waters and walks
Buziaș is a spa resort approximately 35 km south-east of Timișoara. It was developed in the nineteenth century for its carbonated mineral waters. Today, the resort park and springs remain the main reasons to visit.
This is not a spa-resort of the modern kind — it is a small town with walks in the park and springs where you can collect the water. A visit takes half a day. The road passes through Recaș, so the two can be combined.
Lipova and Șoimoș Fortress
Lipova is a town on the Mureș river, approximately 55 km north-east of Timișoara. Above the town stand the ruins of Șoimoș Fortress, built in the thirteenth century and destroyed in the eighteenth. The fortress can be visited freely, and the climb takes 15–20 minutes.
In the town, the Orthodox Church of the Dormition (sixteenth century) and the historic centre are worth a stop. A complete trip, with the fortress and the town, takes half a day.
The road from Timișoara runs on DN69 towards Arad, then south on DN7. From Giroc, the exit north is direct.
Arad: architecture and Reconciliation Park
Arad is the second-largest city in western Romania, approximately 55 km north of Timișoara. The old centre has buildings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in eclectic and Secessionist styles, comparable to those in Timișoara.
Reconciliation Park (formerly 1 December Park) is the central park. The Cultural Palace, State Theatre, and Revoluției Boulevard are on the same walk. A visit takes half a day or a full day if you add lunch and the Arad Fortress (partially open).
From Timișoara, the most direct route is via the A1/DN69 — approximately 50 minutes by car. By train, it is 40 minutes.
Vršac (Serbia): vineyards and tower
Vršac is a town in Serbia, approximately 70 km south-west of Timișoara, across the border at Moravița or Stamora Moravița. The surrounding vineyards produce white wines, and above the town stands the Vršac Tower, the remains of a medieval fortress.
The town has a pedestrian centre, a market square, and Orthodox churches. A day trip covers the drive, the centre, lunch, and the return. You need a passport or national ID card to cross the border.
The road from Giroc exits south-west and reaches the border in approximately 40 minutes. After the border, Vršac is 20 km away.
Banat Village Museum and the Green Forest
The Banat Village Museum is in Timișoara, not outside it, but requires a trip to the north-east, beside the Green Forest. It is an open-air museum with traditional homesteads and an eighteenth-century wooden church. A visit takes 2–3 hours.
This is not a day trip but a complement to the days in the city. It is mentioned in the city break itinerary for the third half-day, if you have one.
Why Giroc for day trips by car
If your schedule includes both days in the city and trips outside, Giroc is more practical than the centre. Parking is at the building, and the exits from the city — towards Recaș, towards Arad, towards Serbia — are more direct than from Union Square.
The Visaj locations in Giroc are Visaj Residence, Visaj Homes, and Visaj Metropolitan. The differences are in Where to stay in Timișoara. Parking is in Accommodation with parking in Timișoara.

Frequently asked questions
What day trip do you recommend near Timișoara?
It depends on your interests. For wine: Recaș. For a fortress and history: Lipova. For another city: Arad. For a trip into Serbia: Vršac. All are less than an hour by car.
Can I combine several destinations in one day?
Yes. Recaș and Buziaș are on the same road and combine well in a day. Lipova and Arad are close, but each deserves time — better to choose one.
Do I need a car for day trips?
For most, yes. Arad can also be reached by train (40 minutes). Recaș, Buziaș, Lipova, and Vršac are harder to access without a car.
What documents do I need for Vršac?
A valid passport or national ID card. Serbia is not in the Schengen area, but EU citizens enter without a visa for short stays.
Why stay in Giroc if I want to take day trips?
Parking is at the building, and exits from the city are more direct. The centre remains the choice for a city break on foot, without a car.
