Two Days in Timișoara: A Weekend Itinerary

One day in the Citadel, from Union Square to Victory Square, and one day in Fabric, at Traian Square and the Millennium Church.

Visaj Team

Two days are enough for the historic Citadel and the Fabric quarter if you keep them separate. The first day stays within the old walls. The second crosses into the manufacturing district, built in the eighteenth century outside the fortifications. For a fuller list of sights, not arranged by day, see Top 10 places to visit in Timișoara.

Day one: the Citadel

The morning belongs to Union Square, the oldest square of the Habsburg city. On its south side stands the Baroque Palace, built as the seat of the Banat administration and now home to the National Museum of Art at number 1. Facing each other across the square are the Roman Catholic Cathedral (the Dome), an episcopal church built in the eighteenth century in Viennese Baroque style, and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral from the same period. In the centre, the Holy Trinity Column was raised after the plague of 1738.

From Union Square, Florimund Mercy Street leads to Liberty Square, the old administrative centre, with the Old Town Hall. From there you can see Huniade Castle, the oldest building in Timișoara, with origins in the fourteenth century when it served as a residence of Charles Robert of Anjou. The castle is the historic seat of the National Museum of Banat. During the current restoration, the museum's collections are housed in the Maria Theresia Bastion at Martin Luther Street 4. The castle can only be viewed from outside; the Bastion, the only one preserved from the fortress rebuilt after 1716, is where you enter.

The afternoon ends at Victory Square. The boulevard between the Opera and the Metropolitan Cathedral represents the city's turn-of-the-century façade. The cathedral, built in neo-Byzantine style, was consecrated in 1946 and anchors the square to the south. The Opera stands at the opposite end. In the evening, return to the terraces on Union Square.

Day two: Fabric

Fabric emerged at the beginning of the eighteenth century, outside the walls, and took its name from the manufactories established here, among them the brewery founded in 1718. This is a district in its own right, not an appendage of the centre. It has its own square and its own churches.

On Traian Square, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St George was built between 1745 and 1755. The iconostasis was painted in 1764 by Nikola Nešković. Until 1863 the church was shared by Serbian and Romanian Orthodox congregations. On Romanilor Square stands the Millennium Church, the largest Roman Catholic church in the city. Designed by Lajos Ybl in neo-Romanesque style, it was built between 1896 and 1901 and consecrated on 13 October 1901, a thousand years after the conversion of King Stephen I. The two squares fill an entire morning if you go inside and pause at the surrounding houses.

If you have a third half-day, the Banat Village Museum is worth the trip. It is an open-air museum on the north-eastern outskirts of the city, beside the Green Forest, opened to the public in 1971, with traditional homesteads from Banat communities and an eighteenth-century wooden church. It does not replace Fabric on a two-day itinerary.
